Volunteer Opportunities

The Miller Recycling Center relies extensively on volunteers to achieve its mission. Only two paid staff are employed at the Center. While the large majority of volunteers are assigned to helping folks sort their things into the correct box, people are also needed to direct traffic, give educational presentations and tours, make signs, operate the balers, mowing the lawn, perform general cleaning and maintenance, etc.

Volunteers who work at our Center generally fall into one of three categories:
ongoing, short-term and group.

Ongoing volunteers These are our core volunteers who work at the Center on an ongoing basis. They volunteer out of a sense of commitment and responsibility to recycling. While many work at the center during their regular time every week, others prefer a once a month schedule. Some volunteer on an “as needed” basis. This group represents our most valuable volunteers and you are most certainly invited to join them.
Short-term volunteers Some people need to fulfill a requirement that they volunteer a specific number of hours to a nonprofit organization. People who fall into this category include students in advance placement classes, youth joining their church, court-ordered community service workers and others. While we make every effort to accommodate the schedule of short-term volunteers, sometimes it is not always possible. It all depends on how many have already committed to volunteer on any particular day.
Group volunteers Groups usually volunteer on a one-time basis. Many groups volunteer for an hour or so after their tour to help people sort their stuff. Unfortunately, we lack the resources to involve groups larger than eight people. Extra adult supervision is always a plus. We would like to accommodate your group if at all possible. Please check with us.

ALL prospective volunteers are REQUIRED to fill out our volunteer application form. Volunteers younger than 18 must have their parent or guardian sign the waiver on the form and by providing a phone number in which the adult may be reached during the volunteers’ work time. Volunteers 14 and younger must be accompanied by a supervising parent or guardian at all times when they are at the Center.

Volunteer work at the Center must be scheduled.
The Volunteer Coordinator schedules all volunteers except for the court-ordered community service workers. If you are fulfilling a court-ordered requirement, there are special provisions in place at the Center that must be adhered to. You will be reporting to the Operations Director and must schedule through him at 316-269-1359.

If possible, please review our PowerPoint Training Presentation before coming to the Center at your assigned time.

Thank you for your interest in recycling. We look forward to meeting you. Please direct volunteer questions to: volunteers@recyclewichita.org
