Plastics Recycling of Kansas (PRoKansas) was chartered in 2001 as a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation. The successful, ongoing operation of the Miller Recycling Center is the organization’s primary purpose. We are governed by a Board of Directors that meets monthly. |
|
| The mission of PRoKansas / Miller Recycling Center is to increase
recycling awareness and participation in the Wichita area. |
|
PRoKansas / Miller Recycling Center will accomplish this mission by:
* Operating and growing the PRoKansas / Miller Recycling Center
* Educating the public through tours, activities, presentations,
school programs, mailings, PR campaigns, and other efforts as
appropriate.
* Involving the public through volunteering and participation in
recycling and education programs
* Leading Wichita and Sedgwick County to a comprehensive curbside
recycling system. |
|
| PRoKansas relies extensively on volunteers to achieve its mission. Only two paid staff are employed at the Center. Volunteers perform all other work. Most of our volunteers assist folks in unloading their vehicles and sorting the stuff that they bring to the Center into the correct box. If you want to learn more about our volunteer program, there is a link on this website dedicated volunteering. |

Our Center is housed in one of three buildings previously owned by the Kice Manufacturing Company. In 2004, the City of Wichita purchased all three of the Kice buildings to make way for the Central Railroad Corridor project. The two buildings on the east side of the tracks have already been torn down. While our future is never definite, we have grown to live with that uncertainty and remain optimistic that we will stay at our current location for at least another few years. |

The Center receives funding from three sources: the sale of recyclables, grants, and individual donations. Like all commodities, the price we receive for the things that we collect fluctuates. We are somewhat protected from large price swings because we collect a wide range of plastic, paper, and other products. Most of our plastics are sold through a broker. About half of our paper products are sold directly to mills
In 2007 we received a $45,000 grant from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to purchase a high capacity horizontal baler. The new baler allows us to process the increased level of collections without the need to hire an additional employee. Individual donations to PRoKansas are always appreciated and are generally tax deductible. Over the years we have accepted several donations made “in memory of” an individual. If you are interested in learning more about donating to our organization our treasurer (donations@recyclewichita.org) can answer any questions that you might have |
